I recently talked with Bob Fields, COO of HiberSense. Claiming smarter building and smaller bills, HiberSense wants to be the smart technology solution for vulnerable populations.

Maureen Jenson: What is HiberSense – can you give us a basic brand history and tell us what the system does?

Bob Fields: HiberSense is a patent-pending smart climate solution that maintains balanced room-to-room comfort while maximizing energy efficiency. HiberSense was founded in 2015 by two Computer Science seniors at the University of Pittsburg along with the department chair, all of whom had personally experienced the discomfort of conventional single-thermostat forced hot air HVAC in their living spaces. Today and still located in Pittsburg, HiberSense is a dynamic, award-winning startup seeking to provide the smartest climate solution to homeowners through technology integrators.

 

MJ: Who is potentially a HiberSense customer?

BF: Our target sales channels typically serve both residential and light commercial markets, and our research has shown that conservatively, there are over 70 million homes in the US alone that use a forced hot air HVAC system relying on a single thermostat. If you break down the demographics further by geography and other factors, our most conservative estimate is that the US residential market is about 6 million homes representing a $12 billion opportunity for smart climate solutions.

 

MJ: How does HiberSense represent an opportunity for technology integrators?

BF: The smart thermostat market has garnered a lot of visibility to consumers, however they still cannot manage room-by-room comfort like a HiberSense system. HiberSense is a protected line that gives technology integrators an opportunity to solve a problem for their clients that plagues many homes. The HiberSense system is ideal for renovations and new construction opportunities.

 

MJ: What are the differentiators here -how do you distinguish your products from competitors?

BF: The smart climate market features smart thermostats, smart vents and legacy-style HVAC zoning systems. The T-stats simply can’t deliver room-to-room comfort, smart vents don’t feature HiberSense’s unique sensors and processing capabilities and the old fashioned zoning systems are intrusive and expensive. HiberSense gives integrators an opportunity to make sure their clients have the best smart home experience possible, and we all know that satisfied clients equal growth through repeat business and referrals.

 

MJ: Where can integrators expect to see/learn more about HiberSense (tradeshows, buying groups, etc.)?
