I recently sat down with Brian Perreault, General Manager of Barrett’s Technology Solutions in Chicago to catch up and also find out if the EOS Masterclasses (Entrepreneurial Operating System Business Management) he recently took are truly having an impact on his business? Maureen Jenson: Hey Brian, what is the latest news from Barrett’s? How is business?
Brian Perreault: Business has been good. Our company has transformed considerably over the years to best meet the demands of our target market. We feel we are well positioned to be successful for years to come.
MJ: What do you attribute your current level of business to?
BP: We have been extremely active with our business development efforts over the past several years. The relationships we’ve created within the luxury trade and specifier communities have led to significant reoccurring opportunities for our company. We have established a strong client base over the past 52 years (Barrett’s was founded in 1966), however we are also being brought into many project opportunities with first time clients through these business development efforts.
MJ: In the middle of 2018 what are the most important trends you are witnessing and keeping your eye on for the future?
BP: We are seeing an increased interest from our clients’ in smart home technologies that enhance comfort and convenience. To that end, lighting control and motorized shades have been two of the fastest growing categories for our company. We are also very excited about HTSA’s initiative of getting into the lighting fixture business. While Barrett’s is just scratching the surface with this, we believe there is a tremendous amount of upside as we move forward.
MJ: I know that you have attended the EOS Masterclasses in the past. How was that experience when it comes to achieving growth a year later?
BP: Immediately after the EOS Masterclass we got to work on completing our VTO (Vision/Traction Organizer). This really forced us to think more about where we are now and where we want to be in the future. Through this process, we established both near term and long-term goals (rocks in EOS speak) along with a consistent set of measurables that we now track on a weekly basis. Having this framework is helping us make important decisions to ensure we are staying on task and meeting our goals.
MJ: What was the most important reason you attended and what was the single greatest benefit?
BP: Before attending the EOS Masterclass our leadership team had all read the book Traction by Gino Wickman. After reading this book, we were confident that the principles within the Traction/EOS system would be beneficial if we implemented them in our company. Like so many others, we continually got caught up in the day-to-day hustle of running the business and just needed a little help getting started. The EOS Masterclass gave us a solid foundation to get things underway. Many benefits have come out of attending this Masterclass but the single greatest benefit was learning how to conduct Level 10 meetings. Our leadership team now conducts Level 10 meetings every week that we have found to be incredibly productive. Given the disciplined structure of these meetings our internal communication has improved and we are accomplishing a lot.
MJ: Was it what you expected?
BP: We already had a good baseline of knowledge on EOS prior to attending the HTSA Masterclass, however participating in this session solidified in our minds that the EOS system is absolutely worth investing the time in.
MJ: Who in your company will attend in the future and who else would you recommend it to?
BP: I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their company and align their team so everyone is moving in the same direction.
MJ: Would you attend again?
BP: Yes, attending the EOS Masterclass was an excellent investment in our time. We would like to thank HTSA for making this learning opportunity possible.
