I recently sat down with Cheena Srinivasan, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Kaleidescape, about day and date movie releases at home and what sessions Kaleidescape has at CEDIA EXPO 2018 – including one with director Barry Sonnenfeld! Part 2 (Part 1 here)

MJ: We are still hearing rumblings about the concept of day & date movie releases at home – do you see it becoming a reality? How would Kaleidescape fit in that scenario and how can dealers capitalize on it?

CS: Yes, I believe in the concept of offering new-release movies still playing in the neighborhood theaters to luxury home cinema customers. It will become a reality, and the ones to most profit from it will be the custom technology integrators.

Multiple things must come together for this to gain market traction. The most pivotal issue is that exhibitors – theater chains – are vitally important to the motion picture studios.

According to a recent survey by MGM Resorts, watching movies in a movie theater was cited as the most popular way to be entertained, followed closely by watching movies at home. The reality is that to truly enjoy a cinematic experience, the movie theaters remain the best choice for much of the population. After all, there are 40,000 screens in prime locations throughout the country. Exhibitors also represent a great way to market movies to the public.

People who own a luxury home cinema have little need to go to a theater. They would rather wait until the movie is released for home viewing. Since theater owners lose no revenue from people in this category, a premium-priced rental for this audience during the theatrical window won’t cannibalize the exhibitors’ revenues. For the content owners, monetizing content from this audience makes good business sense.

Kaleidescape has tens of thousands of customers with luxury home cinemas. We understand the cinematic experience because we’ve worked with the custom electronics channel for over a decade. Over the past few years, we have forged strong working relationships with the content owners to offer the finest content in the finest quality that is worthy for customers who own a luxury home cinema. We’re well positioned to offer such a service – it is not a technological barrier, as Kaleidescape is already regarded as a respected supplier of both products and content designed with the highest content-protection safeguards available in the market today.

Dealers can capitalize on this opportunity because when new releases become available in homes during the early, theatrical window, it will most appeal to luxury home cinema owners.

MJ: We have also seen the trend of dedicated theaters give way to more family-friendly spaces that have become the central hub for home entertainment. How has Kaleidescape evolved its offerings to align with this new trend?

CS: This is a great observation. Real estate prices, combined with the trend towards making better use of living spaces, have resulted in the subdued growth of dedicated theaters. A decade ago, a typical Kaleidescape system cost well over $30,000. Today, our flagship product costs less than $5,000, and includes an appropriate margin for the system integrator to take the time and trouble to meticulously integrate the product with other fine luxury brands. So, we’ve kept pace with the gradual lowering of the price of luxury home cinema.

Whereas Kaleidescape systems were often integrated into multiple viewing zones in the prior years, we’re seeing more single-zone system sales in our current sales mix. This tells us that the integration will be for the entertainment space and not for the whole house – unlike whole-home music or broadcast-TV access.

By increasingly differentiating our offering on the premium content and cinematic experience, we have positioned the brand as an addition to other video sources such as AppleTV, Netflix and Amazon Prime. According to research we commissioned to better understand the price points of home theaters installed by CEDIA dealers, only 1 percent of the 250,000 installations per year are priced at more than $100,000, while 80 percent cost less than $25,000 – inclusive of equipment, acoustics, labor, and programming. The price point of our flagship product makes it possible for at least 20 percent of the home cinema projects built each year to include the Kaleidescape Experience. This is the kind of difference that the custom channel brings compared to mass-market retailers.

MJ: What’s on the horizon with CEDIA 2018 quickly approaching and what is Kaleidescape in particular involved with?

CS: Kaleidescape has successfully pivoted from a brand known for products that dealt with shiny discs to one that offers the finest luxury home cinema products and is also the sole source for the highest fidelity Internet-delivered content.

So long as our focus remains on the luxury home cinema experience, it’s natural to expect more innovations involving our Movie Store. Besides announcing some incredibly valuable content in highest fidelity from around the world, Kaleidescape’s product enhancements will now be inextricably intertwined with all things content-related.
