I recently sat down with Mark Corbin, President, Vanco International to talk about his first year at Vanco, the Beale Street Audio acquisition, and his ideas as Vanco looks forward to CEDIA EXPO 2019. Part 1
Maureen Jenson: Hi Mark. It’s been a year since you were named President of Vanco International, how would you say your first year went?
Mark Corbin: This past year has been one for the books! Vanco had an incredibly successful year thanks to some innovative product introductions in new categories that proved to be a hit. After three years in development, our Evolution EVO-IP HDMI Over IP system launched and has been very well received. It is extremely gratifying to know it was worth all of the hard work we put in to ensure it was a stellar product. Another successful product launch in 2018 includes our Spot for Dot voice-activated in-wall amplifier. With both of these products, we narrowed in on unique opportunities for the higher-end residential and commercial AV markets, and developed products to meet specific installer needs.
It was also our first full year since the Beale Street Audio acquisition, and sales from that line continue to grow. Not only did we expand Beale Street’s distribution throughout the US in 2018, we also continued to improve the design, components, and we even introduced entirely new solutions in response to customer requests.
MJ: What would you say were the highlights of your presidency over the past year? Anything you weren’t expecting?
MC: Since becoming president, I have learned to look at the business from a different perspective compared to that of my previous role as Vice President of Distribution Markets. Although I’m still active with the sales and customer relations section of the business, being president has pushed me to focus on the bigger picture. Previously, my efforts were focused on how to sell through our current products and respond to customer needs, but now my focus has shifted to where we are going as a company, as well as staying on top of the constantly changing industry.
In addition to the successful product launches mentioned previously, another highlight was the shows we exhibited at in 2018. It was our first time back at InfoComm after some years, and I was shocked at how well our brands were received. We are flattered by the support we have received from the distributors and integrators in the commercial space, as well as the overall foot traffic, and good quality leads we walked away with from the show. Furthermore, CEDIA Expo 2018 was by far our most successful show to date in terms of new product introductions and exciting company news, award wins, foot traffic, and qualified leads. We are preparing for and looking forward to both shows in 2019.
