We caught the Ry Cooder show at the Parmamount Theater in Denver earlier in the week. Some thoughts on Ry Cooder, and two short videos – one featuring Ry Cooder, and one from another guitar virtuoso, Mark Knopfler.
For those of you who don’t know who Ry Cooder is, he is a songwriter, film score composer, producer and author. He is best known for his slide guitar work and his background in American roots music. He has played with so many people, including Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, The Rolling Stones, The Chieftans – the list goes on and is quite long. He is also well-known for producing the Buena Vista Social Club album back in 1997. Ry Cooder was ranked 8th on the Rolling Stone magazine’s 2003 list of “The Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.
His new album and the tour that is just is wrapping up in the U.S., Prodigal Son, is his first new album in six years and I highly recommend checking it out if you like roots/gospel music. Here is a video about the making of Prodigal Son:
Next up, I wanted to also share a great video concerning one of my all-time favorite guitar players, Mark Knopfler. From Dire Straits to his prodigious solo career, this man’s guitar work has been exemplary. Here is an interview he did on guitars. If it was just as easy as he portrays, we’d all be rock and roll stars!
